In This Guide
Compare identified handling exposures with a baseline size report to distinguish newly generated fines from fines that were already present.
Identify the Material Response
Freeman notes that processing can damage primary particles depending on material friability and applied conditions. A finer result after handling must therefore retain both the original material and the exposure being investigated. Primary reference: particle damage during processing.
Review a Hypothetical Comparison
Imagine the fraction below a stated size boundary is 5 percent before a fictional handling trial and 9 percent afterward using the same defined measurement basis. The difference is 4 percentage points, while the relative increase is 80 percent. Both describe the comparison, but neither proves where breakage occurred without the exposure and sample history.
Keep the Evidence with the Decision
Identify the baseline sample, material lot, handling route and measurement preparation. Include an appropriate unexposed comparison in the planned evidence where the laboratory considers it meaningful. Preserve changes in dispersion or sampling that might create a different apparent fines fraction independently of the actual handling route.
The useful decision is whether the identified exposure changes the material state relevant to the next process. A supplier should not receive only the final median size and a claim that the machine broke the powder. These invented figures establish no friability limit, accepted transport condition or HM performance.
Does the test reveal new fines generated by an identified handling exposure?
This blank worksheet is for your own project. It contains no H M machine trial result.

Customer Questions
Is 5 to 9 percent a 4 percent relative increase?
No. It is 4 percentage points or 80 percent relative increase.
Does the final fines fraction identify the damage location?
No. Retain the handling and sample histories.
Are the invented values an acceptance criterion?
No. The application requires its own material criterion.
