A powder’s interaction with equipment walls is a different measurement question from its internal shear behaviour.
Identify the Two Contact Partners
Freeman Technology distinguishes wall-friction testing from powder-against-powder shear assessment. A wall-friction test uses a coupon representing the process-equipment surface. The resulting interaction belongs to the powder-and-coupon pair under its test conditions.
Keep surface material, finish, condition and sample identity with the report. A general metal name does not necessarily define the actual contact surface. Avoid describing one coupon result as a property of every wall made from that material. Primary characterization reference.
Illustrative Surface Comparison
Imagine a hypothetical powder assessed against two identified coupon finishes. If their results differ, the comparison describes those tested interfaces. It does not by itself show that an installed hopper has the same finish, stress state or exposure history.
These invented observations contain no HM wall-friction angle or design conclusion. The useful follow-up is to connect the coupon identities to the proposed contact surface and ask the designer what the test supports. Do not infer a hopper-angle change from an incomplete report.
Keep Internal and Wall Results Separate
Ask whether the supplied value concerns internal friction, wall friction or another metric. Their similar names can hide different test partners. Where hopper design is intended, the engineer should identify the complete measurements and analysis used, rather than borrowing a number from another interface.
Use the worksheet to preserve the powder/coupon pairing, conditions and applicable conclusion. For dry-syrup equipment, this adds a clear material-surface question to the discussion while retaining the separate actual hopper and filling-trial evidence. Customer Questions
Is wall friction the same as internal friction?
No. The contact partners and assessment differ.
Can a coupon result cover every steel surface?
Its applicability needs the actual surface and condition comparison.
Does this guide prescribe a hopper angle?
No. The actual engineering design needs the complete relevant evidence.
