A correctly sized PDF can be printed at a different scale. The output-size instruction needs to travel with the released artwork.
Identify the output scaling mode
Actual-size output does not apply a page scaling factor, while fit-to-area modes can enlarge or reduce pages. Custom scaling applies the selected percentage. These output operations are separate from the dimensions defined inside the PDF. Primary reference: Adobe: actual size, fit and custom print scale.
A file's page box therefore does not guarantee the printed feature size by itself. Retain the printer's selected page size, printable area and scaling interpretation. A preview that keeps the whole page visible may have achieved that through a size change relevant to the task.
Calculate a fictional scaled feature
Imagine an approved line spans 60 mm in the PDF. Printing the page at an invented 90 percent scale yields a nominal 54 mm span before physical output effects. Its content and proportions may still look familiar, even though the physical dimension changed by 6 mm.
This example defines no printer accuracy or tolerance and gives no universal instruction for fitting pages. It illustrates why a convenient fit choice must be considered when dimensions, placement or functional print size are part of the approval.
Verify the final-size evidence
State whether the release is intended to be output at its defined size and identify any authorized scale. Retain a dimensioned reference in the proof or an equivalent verification record. Compare the actual output with the relevant physical requirements rather than relying on the screen page size.
If the receiver changes paper size or print route, check the scaling mode again. Cropping and shrinking are different outcomes, and either can affect required information. Approve the actual output interpretation with the release file so the agreed geometry does not depend on an unstated print-dialog default.
Customer Questions
Does a 60 mm PDF feature always print at 60 mm?
No. Later output scaling can change it.
What is its nominal span at the fictional 90 percent scale?
54 mm.
Is actual size a printer-accuracy certificate?
No. Physical output still needs the relevant evidence.
