Compare cylinder-position sensor architectures without assuming that a magnetic switch replacement is electrically or magnetically equivalent.

Separate contact and electronic sensing

Balluff describes reed switches with moving contacts and solid-state magnetic sensing architectures without those contacts. The cylinder magnet and output interface still need compatibility. Primary reference: cylinder-position sensing architectures.

Solid-state is an architectural description, not a universal magnetic sensitivity, connection or replacement approval. The source discusses different electronic mechanisms; this guide copies none of its numerical sensitivity or lifetime comparisons.

A hypothetical replacement record

Imagine a proposal replaces a reed cylinder switch with an electronic model that fits the same slot. Keep mechanical fit, cylinder-magnet identification and electrical interface as separate rows. A matching slot answers only one question. The new device’s ability to interact with the actual field and controller input remains to be established.

Record the required position indication rather than calling either device a complete stroke measurement. A binary indication at one location does not establish position everywhere along travel. If the trial involves fast passing targets or vibration, preserve that duty in the supplier assessment instead of borrowing general architecture claims.

Match the complete proposed function

Ask the component and machine technical owners which sensor/magnet/output combination has been assessed. Retain its exact identity and applicable conditions with the replacement scope. Keep diagnostic availability and failure semantics explicit where the proposed control design needs them.

This comparison specifies evidence to request; it supplies no powered test or replacement wiring procedure. No Balluff sensor, magnet polarity or position-monitoring capability is claimed on HM equipment. The buyer should be able to distinguish a mounting match from a genuinely compatible proposed sensing arrangement.

Customer Questions

Does matching the slot prove compatibility?

Magnetic and electrical requirements remain.

Does solid-state mean one sensing mechanism?

Several electronic magnetic architectures exist.

Does one switch indicate continuous position?

A binary point indication has a narrower scope.
