Rendering Intents: State the Trade when Colours Fall outside the Destination Gamut

Keep the rendering intent with the source and destination profiles when comparing a colour-conversion result.

Library dates organize the collection. Actual publication and revision dates are shown separately.

Colour spaces can have different reproducible ranges. A rendering intent defines a conversion compromise, rather than guaranteeing that every source appearance is reproduced unchanged.

State the gamut-mapping choice

ICC workflows distinguish rendering intents such as perceptual, saturation and the colourimetric intents. They provide different transformation approaches when colour representations and viewing or media conditions differ. The selected intent belongs with the profiles used by the conversion. Primary reference: International Color Consortium: rendering intents in colour workflows.

A colour outside a destination's reproducible range cannot be made available simply by choosing a menu label. The relevant review asks how the transformation treats the image and which appearance differences matter for the task. There is no universal intent that proves all packaging colours correct.

Compare an invented conversion record

Suppose two hypothetical exports use the same source and destination profiles but different intents. A composite preview may show changed relationships among vivid image regions or a different treatment of the paper white. The shared profile names do not make the conversion records identical.

The example assigns no numeric colour error or rule for choosing one intent. It identifies why the intent must be retained when comparing proofs. The actual artwork, intended output condition and agreed appearance criteria determine which differences need evidence.

Document the approved transformation

Record the source profile, destination profile, rendering intent and relevant conversion settings with the release. Keep a proof generated through that same stated route. A later export using an unstated default can change the interpretation behind an otherwise unchanged-looking file name.

For critical regions, compare the actual proof evidence rather than assuming a whole-image preference answers every colour requirement. If the output condition or transformation changes, reopen the relevant review. The approval should identify the demonstrated result and its conversion basis so a future reproduction can be assessed consistently.

Customer Questions

Can intent create a colour the output cannot reproduce?

No. It specifies how the conversion handles the available ranges and conditions.

Are equal profile names a complete conversion record?

No. Keep the intent and relevant settings too.

Is one intent universally best for packaging?

No. Review the actual artwork and agreed output evidence.
