RGB and BGR Arrays: Channel Position Is Part of the Pixel Definition

Retain channel order before interpreting a three-component image array as displayed color.

Library dates organize the collection. Actual publication and revision dates are shown separately.

An array's first channel can mean red or blue under different format conventions. The numbers alone do not identify that meaning.

Keep channel positions defined

RGB and BGR conventions place the red and blue components at different array positions. A conversion must use the actual source and destination definitions. Three stored values do not identify their channel meanings without that convention, even when image dimensions and component depth are otherwise unchanged. Primary reference: OpenCV RGB and BGR conversion conventions.

For an original decoding record, label every component position and retain the format identifier. Distinguish channel reordering from white-balance adjustment or color-space conversion. Swapping positions changes which component receives each value rather than measuring a changed surface under new lighting.

Decode a fictional triplet

Suppose an invented three-byte triplet is [200,20,10]. In an RGB convention, its red component is 200 and blue component 10. In a BGR convention, blue is 200 and red 10. The same byte sequence therefore describes different colors when the convention is changed.

To preserve the defined RGB color in a BGR array, the triplet becomes [10,20,200]. Green remains at the center position in this example. These numbers are a teaching encoding record, not a measured ink color or a complete color-managed display prediction.

Check the conversion handoff

Prepare an original source/destination channel table with a deliberately unequal red and blue test triplet. Record the conversion stage and compare values after it. A neutral equal-channel image can conceal a swap, so it should not be the only evidence that channel positions were decoded correctly.

This guide claims no HM color accuracy or camera setting. Its reader decision is whether a changed apparent color follows channel interpretation rather than a physical sample change. Channel order should remain attached to any array used for later color analysis or display.
