Opening width and access angle are two dimensions with different roles.
Retain separate geometry labels
TWI’s joint-design discussion explains preparing the joint to give electrode access to its root. Root opening and groove geometry therefore need their own defined dimensions. Primary reference: TWI technical explanation.
An angle cannot supply a missing gap width, and a gap width cannot specify the surrounding access faces. Keep the actual joint section and the dimension locations before comparing two preparation records.
Compare fictional section records
Suppose hypothetical section A has a 2 mm root gap and a 60-degree included groove angle. Section B has the same root gap but a 40-degree included angle. The shared opening does not make their access geometry identical.
Conversely, another sketch could retain the 60-degree angle while changing the root gap. These original comparisons identify independent fields; they specify no acceptable joint preparation, electrode choice or welding procedure. Angle alone also does not establish actual root fusion.
Make access a visible question
Prepare a cross-section with root opening, included angle, root face and thickness labeled separately where applicable. Preserve whether an angle describes one bevel face or the total included groove.
Ask the fabricator how the specified preparation supports the intended root access and joint requirements. Trace any proposed revision through all affected fields rather than approving it from one unchanged number. This worksheet helps prevent an abbreviated drawing or quote from hiding a meaningful change in the joining geometry.
Customer Questions
Does equal root gap mean equal groove geometry?
The included angles can still differ.
Is a bevel angle always the included angle?
Retain the drawing’s specific angle definition.
Does access geometry prove root fusion?
The actual joint evidence remains a separate question.
