An axis-aligned enclosure can become larger when the same shape rotates. A rotated box describes another geometric convention.
Define the enclosing convention
An axis-aligned bounding rectangle follows the image coordinate axes. A minimum-area rotated rectangle can choose another orientation while enclosing the selected points. These boxes can report different dimensions for the same support, so width and height need their enclosure convention and coordinate unit attached. Primary reference: OpenCV upright and minimum-area rotated bounding rectangles.
For an original geometry sheet, preserve the point set and each box's corner coordinates. Keep the rotation definition alongside any side dimensions. A swapped width or height label does not establish a physical dimension change when the enclosing reference axes have changed.
Rotate a fictional rectangle
Consider a continuous rectangle with side lengths 4 and 2, rotated 45 degrees from the image axes. Its axis-aligned span in each direction is (4 + 2)/√2, approximately 4.243. The enclosing upright area is 18, while the shape-aligned rectangle has area 8.
The shape itself did not gain area. Empty space was admitted by an enclosure constrained to the image axes. This invented continuous-coordinate example is not a prediction of integer bounding-box rounding in software, and its units do not automatically represent millimeters.
Review orientation with dimensions
Prepare an original overlay showing the same boundary, image axes and both enclosures. Compare corner coordinates before diagnosing a changed width report. If a later decision needs orientation-independent shape dimensions, define that geometric question rather than silently switching box conventions across observations.
This guide claims no HM dimensional measurement accuracy or universal orientation threshold. Its reader decision is whether a changed enclosing dimension reflects the selected reference axes and admitted empty space. Preserve that basis before treating box sizes as comparable measurements of a physical pack.
Customer Questions
What is the fictional upright enclosure area?
Eighteen square coordinate units.
What is the shape-aligned rectangle area?
Eight square coordinate units.
Did rotation change the original area?
No. It changed the axis-constrained enclosure.
