The word cracking does not identify one mechanism.
Identify the formation stage
TWI associates solidification cracking with the final solidification stage, while hydrogen cracking has a different mechanism and can be observed around or after cooling. These descriptions need their material and timing context. Primary reference: TWI technical explanation. Primary reference: TWI technical explanation.
Hot cracking is a broader expression that can also include liquation cracking, so retain the specific term used. Observing a crack later does not by itself show when it formed or which mechanism produced it.
Read fictional history records
Imagine record A contains evidence connecting a crack to the final solidification of weld metal. Record B contains a later crack observation and a separate hydrogen-related investigation. A review reduces both records to the date when someone photographed the crack.
That date identifies discovery rather than the complete formation history. These invented records do not diagnose either mechanism. Keep the supported formation stage, region and available investigation evidence beside the observation time.
Make the hypothesis testable
Create columns for crack location, discovery stage, evidence of formation stage and the proposed mechanism. Preserve unresolved fields instead of selecting a cause from one convenient timeline label.
Ask what observations distinguish the mechanism from other plausible explanations under the actual material and joint conditions. A specific hypothesis can guide the relevant technical review without becoming a confirmed cause. The worksheet supplies no welding temperature, waiting interval or crack-acceptance rule, and it claims no actual HM failure history.
Customer Questions
Does later discovery prove delayed formation?
Discovery time alone does not establish formation time.
Is hot cracking always one narrowly defined mechanism?
The cited terminology can also include liquation cracking.
What belongs beside a mechanism label?
Material region, timing context and supporting evidence.
