Spring Fatigue: Keep Mean and Alternating Stress Separate

Describe a cyclic spring-stress case using its minimum, maximum, mean and alternating components.

Library dates organize the collection. Actual publication and revision dates are shown separately.

Two spring duties can share the same peak stress and still impose different cyclic loading patterns.

Preserve the cycle endpoints

Newcomb's spring glossary defines stress range through minimum and maximum operating stresses. Those endpoints supply more information than the peak alone. Primary reference: Newcomb Spring terminology.

For a simple cyclic description, mean stress is the midpoint of the endpoints and alternating amplitude is half their difference. These descriptors organize the load case; they do not predict fatigue life without an appropriate material, geometry and application assessment.

A hypothetical equal-peak comparison

Imagine two fictional stress cycles. A ranges from 20 to 100 MPa, with mean 60 MPa and alternating amplitude 40 MPa. B ranges from 60 to 100 MPa, with mean 80 MPa and alternating amplitude 20 MPa. Both peak at 100 MPa, but the cyclic descriptors differ. Do not rank their life from the peak alone or declare one safe from these descriptors alone.

Record endpoints, units, cycle count or frequency context and the source of the stress estimate. The values are teaching assumptions, not measured stresses, material limits or HM service-life evidence.

Connect the descriptors to actual spring selection

Ask what independent information supports the stress model and the intended repeated-load duty. Retain material, manufacturing and environment references where relevant. A static force test can answer its stated question without establishing the required fatigue behavior.

Keep later operating changes with the load-case record. A changed minimum position can alter cyclic stress even when the maximum load remains unchanged. This guide helps define a useful request to a spring designer; it supplies no endurance threshold, guaranteed cycle count or universal replacement interval.

Customer Questions

Do equal peak stresses imply equal fatigue duties?

No. Minimum, mean and alternating stress can differ.

Does a stress-range calculation predict life?

No. Life assessment needs the applicable material, geometry and duty evidence.

Can a changed minimum spring position matter?

Yes. It can change the cycle even if the maximum condition stays the same.
