Distinguish a responsive static-friction force from an impending-slip limit.

Read the inequality

In a simple contact model, static friction satisfies |F| ≤ μₛN; sliding friction is commonly modeled as μₖN. Static friction need not equal its limit. Primary reference: static and kinetic friction.

The contact state determines which expression answers the question. The coefficient must belong to the relevant materials and conditions. Treating a remembered dry-surface value as an actual contaminated-contact property would introduce an unsupported input.

A fictional force balance

Assume a hypothetical stationary contact has normal load 100 N and an applicable static coefficient 0.4. Its modeled limit is 40 N. If equilibrium requires 15 N along the interface, the static friction magnitude is 15 N in this ideal example, not automatically 40 N.

A demand of 45 N exceeds the assumed limit, so that unchanged static equilibrium cannot be justified. If the contact is sliding and an explicitly assumed kinetic coefficient is 0.3, the separate simplified model gives 30 N. These numbers are invented and do not establish real grip or permitted load.

Record state and conditions

Prepare columns for motion state, demanded tangential force, normal force, coefficient evidence and the applicable model. Retain direction separately from magnitude. A stationary part may still have zero friction if no tangential balance requires it.

Use actual contact evidence when assessing a changed surface, lubricant or environment. The worksheet checks reasoning before component review; it does not define a friction test or approve a holding function. No installed machine contact coefficient is claimed.

Customer Questions

Must static friction equal μₛN?

It may be smaller when equilibrium requires less.

Can one coefficient cover every surface condition?

The applicable contact evidence must be identified.

Does this establish a holding rating?

It is a conditional contact model.
