Steam Quality: Pressure Alone Leaves the Enthalpy Unresolved

At saturation, temperature does not tell you how much of a wet steam mixture is vapour.

At saturation, temperature does not tell you how much of a wet steam mixture is vapour.

Define the Thermal Model

Dryness fraction x is the vapour mass fraction of a saturated mixture. Its specific enthalpy is h = h_f + x h_fg. Spirax Sarco’s steam-state explanation distinguishes this mixture from dry saturated steam. Use a mass fraction, rather than a visual cloud size or an assumed volume percentage.

Compare a Hypothetical Case

Take invented property values h_f = 500 kJ/kg and h_fg = 2,000 kJ/kg at one stated saturation condition. A mixture with x = 0.90 has h = 2,300 kJ/kg; x = 1.00 gives 2,500 kJ/kg. Both share the specified saturation temperature in this model. Treating the first as dry steam overstates its enthalpy by 200 kJ/kg.

Complete the Engineering Review

Keep the pressure-temperature state, dryness evidence and enthalpy calculation in distinct fields. Ask what sampling or measurement supports the specified utility quality and whether its location represents delivery to the equipment. A property table supplies the saturated endpoints; it does not supply the actual mixture fraction arriving at the process.

Use the processing-tank context to organize utility questions. The invented values are not steam-table data or an HM steam-quality result. This guide calculates mixture enthalpy and does not establish product suitability, sterilisation performance or a utility acceptance procedure.

Customer Questions

Is x a volume fraction?

It is a vapour mass fraction.

Can saturated temperature show x?

No. Different fractions can share that state temperature.

Can a table measure delivered quality?

The actual fraction needs separate evidence.
