A refined corner coordinate can fall between sample centers. The extra decimal places do not create extra independent pixels.
Identify the estimated coordinate
Subpixel corner refinement estimates coordinates with fractional pixel values from the available image neighborhood. The result is a location estimate under an algorithm and its parameters. It should remain distinguished from the native sample grid that supplied the data and from a separately demonstrated localization error. Primary reference: OpenCV subpixel corner refinement.
For an original review record, preserve the input image, initial corner coordinate and refined result. Keep the coordinate convention and refinement neighborhood together. A fractional number alone does not state how accurate or repeatable that location is for a particular feature.
Read a fictional refined location
Suppose an invented trial record starts with corner coordinate (12,8) and later reports (12.25,7.5). The reported differences are +0.25 in x and −0.5 in y. These are hypothetical recorded estimates; this guide does not claim that a specific input array or software call generated them.
No native sample centers were added by reporting the fractional coordinate. It is also incorrect to infer that the true corner lies exactly at the reported estimate. That would require independent reference evidence and an uncertainty or error analysis appropriate to the image geometry.
Review the estimate's evidence
Prepare an original comparison across retained input patches, recording the initialization, neighborhood and stopping rule. Keep an independent reference location in a separate field when one exists. Compare residuals to that reference rather than treating decimal resolution as the measurement's demonstrated accuracy.
This guide does not promise HM subpixel performance or prescribe a refinement setting. Its reader decision is whether an estimated fractional location has been separated from acquired sample density and independently supported error. Those three quantities should remain distinguishable in the inspection record.
Customer Questions
What is the fictional x-coordinate change?
Plus zero point twenty-five pixel units.
Does refinement add native samples?
No. It estimates a coordinate from existing data.
Do decimal places prove localization accuracy?
No. Independent error evidence is still needed.
