A probe drawing needs to identify where its sensing region sits. The surrounding flow, wall and exposed stem can affect which temperature the installed reading represents.
Separate insertion length from sensing location
WIKA’s thermowell-placement guidance considers position in a pipe and interaction with the flow. The application review should identify the actual sensing region and its thermal path, rather than treating a nominal stem length as evidence that every installation measures the same process condition.
Review a hypothetical drawing change
Imagine a pipe fitting is revised to include a longer stand-off. The probe part number remains unchanged, but the location of the sensing region relative to the internal stream shifts. Compare the old and new section drawings before accepting the temperature results as directly comparable.
Mark the process boundary, wall, insertion, sensing region and externally exposed stem. Ask the probe supplier which construction and immersion evidence applies. A universal rule based only on a multiple of diameter can omit the relevant geometry and thermal conditions.
Retain the approved measurement location
Describe the intended process quantity and attach the reviewed installation drawing to the trial evidence. Record nearby wall or flow conditions relevant to that method. Thermowell strength and dynamic behavior require their own review; an acceptable thermal location does not establish mechanical suitability. This article supplies no installation dimension or live modification instruction.

Customer Questions
Is insertion length alone a complete location specification?
No. Identify the sensing region and geometry.
Can a stand-off change the measurement arrangement?
Yes. Review the revised location.
Does thermal suitability prove thermowell strength?
No. Mechanical suitability requires separate evidence.
