Recovered mass, chemical product mass and theoretical product mass can differ. A yield percentage needs the correct numerator before it is compared with product purity.
Name the product and reference amount
Chemical yield describes the fraction obtained through a specified reaction or separation. In a product-mass report, the amount of the target compound must be identified separately from other recovered material. Purity and reaction yield therefore answer different ratio questions. Primary reference.
Compare a fictional mixed recovery
Define a fictional theoretical product mass of 20.0 g. The recovered solid weighs 18.0 g, but independent composition information assigns only 15.0 g to the target product. Product yield relative to the stated theoretical mass is 15.0/20.0 = 75.0%. Product mass fraction in the recovered solid is 15.0/18.0 ≈ 83.3%.
Using 18.0/20.0 gives 90.0% for total recovered mass relative to theoretical product mass. Calling that number target-product yield would conceal the invented three grams of other material. The example neither identifies those materials nor supplies an assay method.
Retain the independent composition evidence
Build an original recovery record with gross recovered mass, assigned target-product amount and theoretical basis in separate fields. Preserve the composition method and its applicable reporting basis. If the assay result is unavailable, avoid implying that the gross mass is entirely the desired chemical compound.
For a processing trial, this distinction helps reconcile chemical output expectations with collected material. It does not establish pharmaceutical purity, acceptance criteria or an HM recovery guarantee. The reader decision is whether the percentage describes reaction output, recovered mixture composition or another explicitly named comparison.
