Compare absolute instants before ordering records whose timestamp strings use different UTC offsets.
Preserve the UTC offset
RFC 3339 represents Internet timestamps with numeric UTC offsets. The offset relates local clock representation to the corresponding UTC instant. Primary reference: timestamp offsets.
An hour/minute string without its offset or timezone context may be insufficient for comparison. Even fully specified timestamp strings should not be assumed to sort chronologically as raw text when their offsets differ.
An illustrative ordering conflict
Take fictional records 2026-10-08T10:00:00+05:30 and 2026-10-08T05:00:00Z. The first converts to 04:30 UTC, so it occurs 30 minutes before the second. Comparing the displayed 10:00 against 05:00 as if both were on the same clock basis reverses that conclusion.
Keep the original representations plus an agreed comparable instant in a worksheet. Do not discard the offset merely to make columns shorter. If a source supplies only local wall-clock text, record the missing context rather than guessing an offset from the receiving computer.
Keep ordering assumptions visible
Ask the integration owner how timestamp parsing, timezone context and precision are retained. Clock alignment still affects whether the assigned instants faithfully represent the physical occurrences; conversion alone does not establish that evidence. Separate this from identifying which system supplied each timestamp.
This guide sets no clock or timezone settings and describes no real HM records. It provides a simple interpretation check for a data export. A reproducible chronological comparison should preserve the source text, offset meaning and any unresolved clock limitations instead of treating a visually larger local hour as proof of a later event.
Customer Questions
Does 10:00 always occur after 05:00?
Offsets can change the comparison.
What is 10:00+05:30 in UTC?
04:30 on the stated date.
Does correct conversion prove a synchronized clock?
Alignment is separate evidence.
