A raised face and a joined root describe different parts of the section.
Identify the region being described
TWI describes incomplete root fusion or penetration as a joint-root imperfection. A visible weld face does not establish the condition of that internal region. Primary reference: TWI technical explanation.
A photograph showing deposited metal above the surrounding face can support a surface-geometry observation. It cannot, by that observation alone, resolve how far fusion extends into the intended joint. Retain both questions separately in the review.
Read a hypothetical evidence pair
Imagine fictional record A contains a surface photograph with a pronounced cap. Record B contains a suitably identified section showing the actual root region. A reviewer substitutes A for B because the cap looks substantial.
The substitution changes the evidence boundary. Cap height describes material near the external face, while the requested root information concerns another location. This invented document comparison supplies no acceptance limit, section result or verified weld condition.
Request the relevant joint evidence
Make rows for face profile, required penetration scope and the method supporting each reported condition. Keep joint orientation and specimen identity so a section cannot be confused with another location or revision.
Ask the fabricator what demonstrates the specified root condition under the actual project requirements. An attractive cap can remain useful surface evidence without being promoted into a penetration claim. This gives a concrete documentation request rather than an unsupported judgment of joint quality from appearance.
Customer Questions
Does a large cap establish root penetration?
The internal root condition needs relevant evidence.
Which fictional record concerns the root directly?
B explicitly describes a joint-section record.
Is a surface photograph useless?
It can support its defined surface observations.
