White Balance and Colour Judgement: Keep the Illuminant with the Result

Preserve illumination and channel-gain settings before treating colour images as comparable inspection evidence.

Library dates organize the collection. Actual publication and revision dates are shown separately.

Making a reference look neutral is useful for image presentation. It does not by itself establish a traceable colour decision for every packaging surface.

Record what white balance changed

White balance can apply digital gain separately to red, green and blue channels to correct a colour cast. The correction changes the output representation; it does not replace the illumination that produced the original observations. Primary reference: Basler: white-balance channel correction.

Keep the lighting state and the applied channel ratios with comparison images. An automatic correction that changes between captures can make two outputs look similar without demonstrating identical acquisition. Describe the feature's colour evidence separately from the choice to render a neutral reference as white.

Follow a fictional neutral reference

Suppose an invented neutral reference yields channel values 80, 100 and 125. Applying hypothetical multipliers 1.25, 1.00 and 0.80 gives 100, 100 and 100. That arithmetic describes one selected reference under assumed linear, unclipped processing.

It does not show that every printed colour will match under those corrections, or that the camera represents human colour perception or a measurement standard. The values are illustrative and do not specify any actual camera's settings. A changed illuminant still requires a new comparison of the relevant surfaces.

Keep the comparison reproducible

Store the actual reference identity, lighting condition and processing settings used for the trial. Retain original frames so the reviewer can distinguish acquisition from later correction. If the feature decision is colour based, identify the agreed comparison method and surfaces instead of relying on a neutral background alone.

During a lighting replacement, compare the important coloured features as well as the reference. Record whether automatic balance was active and whether additional colour transformations were applied. A neutral-looking screenshot is one observable outcome; the task's ability to distinguish the required surfaces needs its own retained evidence.

Customer Questions

Does white balance replace the illuminant?

No. It changes channel values in the output representation.

Does one neutral reference prove every colour?

No. Review the actual coloured features and their comparison method.

Why record automatic correction state?

It shows whether processing could change between captures.
