Working Distance and Focus Adjustment: Preserve the Installed Object Plane

Define physical clearance to the inspection plane and keep it separate from an adjustable lens's focus position.

Library dates organize the collection. Actual publication and revision dates are shown separately.

Turning a focus ring changes an optical adjustment; it does not move the camera away from a moving package. A layout review needs the physical distance as well.

Define the reference surfaces

Working distance is a physical lens-to-object constraint in lens selection. A focus adjustment describes an optical setting within the selected arrangement, rather than the available mechanical clearance. Primary reference: Edmund Optics: basic lens selection.

On the proposed layout, identify the front lens surface, the inspected object plane and anything that projects into the intervening space. Keep the nominal plane separate from the object's permitted movement. An adjustment ring marked with a distance is not a substitute for these measured layout references.

Compare two fictional layouts

In an invented review, Layout A places the front lens surface 180 mm from the target plane and reserves 25 mm for package-height variation. Layout B provides 120 mm and has a different lens. Both sample images look focused. That observation does not make their clearance, accessible space or operating depth envelopes equal.

Make a sketch for each layout and label the reference surfaces before comparing numbers. Ask whether the lens evidence belongs to that installed plane and whether the object can reach a different plane during the task. These fictional dimensions specify no HM camera position or safe clearance.

Keep installation and optical evidence together

Retain the actual mounting drawing beside the lens configuration used for the demonstration. Record whether the example image was acquired before the final support and package path were fixed. A later bracket revision can change the physical arrangement even when a focus adjustment recovers a visually sharp image.

Recheck the intended feature and coverage after that revision. The decision is whether the chosen lens and layout jointly meet the task, not whether an operator can obtain a sharp-looking picture at one convenient package position.

Customer Questions

Does a sharp image establish mechanical clearance?

No. Review the physical references on the layout.

Can a focus-ring label replace the installation drawing?

No. Retain the actual object plane and front-lens reference.

What should follow a camera-bracket change?

A review of the affected physical geometry and task evidence.
