An annotation can follow a changing feature or remain independent. Its relationship matters when reviewing updated dimensions.
Identify the continuing reference
An associative drawing dimension is linked to the geometry it measures. Changes to the referenced geometry can update the dimension, and movement of the related view can move its annotation. This relationship differs from an unrelated numeric note placed nearby. Primary reference: Autodesk: drawing dimensions associated with views and model geometry.
Association identifies a dependency, not an approval of the selected feature. A linked annotation can accurately report the wrong pair of points for the interface question. Verify which references it uses before treating automatic updating as proof of the intended meaning.
Follow an invented model revision
Suppose a fictional feature moves from 20 to 25 mm relative to a stated model reference. A dimension associated with that coordinate can update from 20 to 25 mm. An independent note containing the characters 20 has no equivalent geometric dependency merely because it occupies the same sheet.
This illustration assumes a valid continuing reference and makes no promise about every file exchange or update operation. If the feature is replaced, suppressed or removed, the relationship can require investigation. A stale value and a changed nominal requirement are different possible explanations.
Review both references and resulting text
Identify the dimension's referenced points or edges and check its state after the actual update. Compare the resulting value with the intended geometric quantity. Where the document reports an unresolved or detached reference, obtain a corrected definition rather than relying on the old-looking number.
For a released interface drawing, preserve the model and view identity used to produce the annotation. An automatic update can improve consistency, but the reviewer still needs to confirm that the correct feature relationship survived. The useful record connects the displayed number with the specific geometry that is intended to support the receiving part.
Customer Questions
Does automatic updating approve the chosen points?
No. Verify that they are the intended references.
Does a nearby independent number inherit association?
No. Proximity does not create a geometric dependency.
What should be checked after a feature replacement?
Confirm the dimension's references and resulting value.
