Manual Dimension Overrides: Visible Text Can Disagree with Model Geometry

Check whether manually supplied dimension text replaces the calculated geometric value in a released drawing.

Library dates organize the collection. Actual publication and revision dates are shown separately.

In This Guide

A plausible printed number can be an override. Its appearance alone does not establish what the referenced geometry measures.

Distinguish custom text from the calculation

A drawing dimension can display user-supplied text instead of its calculated value. Other text can be added while retaining the calculation in the display. These states need to be distinguished before a numeric annotation is used as a model measurement. Primary reference: Autodesk: user text overriding a calculated dimension value.

An override may have an intentional documentation purpose, but that purpose does not change the underlying geometry automatically. Identify whether the release contains a calculated value, an added note or a replacement number whose authority must be established separately.

Inspect an invented mismatched label

Imagine a fictional pair of model points is 50 mm apart while its dimension displays the manually entered text 55. The printed text and geometric calculation disagree by 5 mm in this defined example. Editing the text back to 50 would alter the annotation, not by itself move either point.

The scenario supplies no actual discrepancy or acceptable drawing practice. It does not assume every override is an error. It shows why a receiver must resolve the intended requirement rather than silently choosing either the visible number or the measured geometry.

Resolve authority before using the value

Inspect the annotation's actual calculated quantity and any replacement text. Obtain the responsible designer's interpretation where the release is inconsistent. If the geometry or requirement changes, update the relevant controlled definition rather than merely making a screenshot look coherent.

Keep the corrected release identity with the handoff. A manual note might explain an exceptional representation, while an unintended override can hide a stale design. The review should establish which nominal value the mating part must follow and ensure that the final documentation communicates that decision without an unexplained conflict.

Customer Questions

Does replacing dimension text necessarily move geometry?

No. It can change only the displayed string.

What is the fictional annotation disagreement?

55 displayed versus 50 mm calculated, a 5 mm difference.

Should every override be treated as an error automatically?

No. Resolve its purpose and the intended authoritative requirement.
