Choose the ideal support and load location before comparing elastic beam deflection.
Keep the boundary conditions
For uniform elastic beams, a cantilever tip load gives PL³/(3EI), while a simply supported midspan point load gives PL³/(48EI). These formulas describe different support/load cases. Primary reference: beam deflection cases.
Use the same span, modulus and relevant second moment only when those assumptions are appropriate. A real bracket may not behave as an ideal fixed end or pin support. Connection flexibility can therefore invalidate a seemingly exact textbook comparison.
A hypothetical common-span calculation
Assume P = 100 N, L = 0.5 m, E = 200 GPa and I = 1×10⁻⁸ m⁴. The cantilever expression gives approximately 2.083 mm at its tip. The simply supported midspan expression gives approximately 0.1302 mm at midspan. The factor of sixteen follows from these stated cases.
Changing the support interpretation is not a material improvement. Both hypothetical rows use the same E and I, and observe different load locations. Neither result accounts for actual joint compliance, local contact deformation or whether the assumed elastic regime is valid.
Prepare a model sketch
Show where translation and rotation are constrained, where the load acts and where deflection matters. Record whether the span is measured between supports or from a clamp to the load. Keep the cross-section bending axis visible beside I.
Ask the responsible designer to reconcile the ideal model with the real support arrangement. The comparison is a reasoning check, not a permitted deflection or proof of structural adequacy. Actual design requires the applicable load cases, material evidence and connection assessment rather than choosing whichever formula produces the smaller answer.
Customer Questions
Can the formulas be interchanged?
They require different support and load assumptions.
Does the factor sixteen prove a real bracket improvement?
It compares only the stated ideal cases.
Where is each result evaluated?
At the cantilever tip or simply supported midspan respectively.
