Bearing Seals and Shields: Compare Protection with Friction and Service Conditions

Compare bearing closure functions against contamination, friction and the actual service duty.

Library dates organize the collection. Actual publication and revision dates are shown separately.

A bearing shield and a contact seal are different constructions. Their names should not be collapsed into one generic sealed-bearing requirement.

Compare functions rather than appearances

SKF distinguishes shields, low-friction seals and contact seals in its bearing-sealing discussion. Their contact arrangements and friction differ. A closure's suitability therefore needs the actual environment and operating basis, not just a photograph of a covered bearing. Primary reference: SKF bearing sealing solutions.

For a machinery proposal, record contamination sources, moisture exposure, speed and the intended maintenance arrangement. Keep integrated bearing closures separate from external housing seals. One can support a different part of the protection strategy from the other.

A hypothetical closure comparison

Consider two fictional applications. One has a controlled dry environment and a defined friction-sensitive duty. The other has a stated contamination exposure. A proposal that uses the same generic sealed designation for both leaves important selection questions unanswered. Make rows for closure construction, relevant environment, operating condition and the supplier's suitability basis.

Do not declare a contact seal universally better simply because it sounds more protective. Nor should lower friction alone settle the second application. The example specifies no bearing brand on an HM machine and supplies no permitted speed or cleaning instruction.

Preserve the complete closure identity

Request the exact bearing suffix and the referenced closure construction, together with the basis for its intended duty. If a substitute is proposed, compare that complete identity rather than only the main bearing number. Ask whether changes affect the documented lubrication or service scope.

The final record should explain why the closure fits the defined task and which conditions remain outside the assessment. This provides a reusable decision basis if the environment or operating mode changes. It does not establish that the whole machine tolerates a particular exposure merely because one component has a contact seal; the assembly's external-protection scope remains a separate project question.

Customer Questions

Are shields and contact seals the same construction?

No. Identify the actual closure design and its relevant contact/friction behavior.

Does a contact seal prove machine washdown suitability?

No. Component closure and complete machine exposure scope are different questions.

What should be checked on a substitute bearing?

Its complete designation and closure, with the application and maintenance basis.
