In This Guide
Separate magnetic metal detection from a capacitance change before selecting a sensor for a container or ingredient.
Name the physical interaction
Balluff describes capacitive sensing through a change in capacitance associated with the target and electric field. Inductive sensing instead uses an electromagnetic interaction with a suitable metal target. Primary reference: capacitive sensing principle.
The material-property question comes before deciding that a device senses presence or a particular product condition. A capacitive response may involve several nearby materials. A generic detection label does not identify which contribution caused a change.
A hypothetical container worksheet
Imagine a proposed target consists of a plastic wall plus a liquid behind it. Create separate rows for the wall, liquid and nearby support. Then compare a metal flag on the same assembly as a different proposed target. The two layouts ask the sensors to interact with different properties.
If the liquid or wall composition changes, an observed signal cannot automatically be assigned to level alone. If the metal flag moves while the vessel remains unchanged, its inductive indication concerns flag position rather than the contents. These invented layouts illustrate inference boundaries, not working HM circuits.
Define what should be detected
Write the desired event, all intervening materials, geometry and environmental conditions. Ask the supplier what actual evidence establishes the discrimination needed by that task. Keep nuisance changes visible, including a changed wall or residue where relevant to the proposed assessment.
Choose a representative evaluation plan with the technical owner and preserve both detected and undetected conditions. This guide does not set sensitivity, approve a sensor behind a wall or promise that every nonmetallic material can be detected at the same distance.
