Check Valve Opening, Flow Loss and Leakage Are Separate Questions

Opening a check valve, passing the required forward flow and preventing reverse flow are three different evidence questions.

Opening a check valve, passing the required forward flow and preventing reverse flow are three different evidence questions.

Identify the Physical Basis

Cracking pressure identifies the first indication of forward flow; it does not necessarily identify the fully open state. Resealing identifies the return to no indicated flow under its defined conditions. Swagelok’s check-valve explanation distinguishes these terms. A forward pressure-loss curve and a reverse-leakage test condition therefore should not be replaced by one opening-pressure number.

Work Through an Example

In a hypothetical comparison, a valve has a quoted cracking pressure of 0.2 bar and a measured forward loss of 0.5 bar at the required flow. These values are not contradictory: they answer opening and running-flow questions. A third result stating “no visible reverse flow at 1 bar backpressure” adds a separate test condition. It should not silently become a promise of zero leakage at every reverse pressure or with another liquid.

Use the Result in the Review

Read the valve’s selected model, flow direction and spring option with the pressure definitions. Request the forward-loss basis at the planned flow and the exact reverse-flow or leak criterion relevant to the process. State temperature and fluid condition beside each result. Where opening and resealing depend on different pressure directions, keep the upstream and downstream references explicit in the worksheet.

A servo-piston filling inquiry should identify the selected product-contact valve arrangement separately. This terminology guide does not assert that a specific check valve is installed. It helps prevent an opening specification from being mistaken for delivered-flow performance or isolation evidence.

Customer Questions

Does cracking mean fully open?

No. It marks the first indicated flow under a defined condition.

Is resealing pressure always the cracking pressure?

No. Read the selected valve’s separate definitions and conditions.

Does a check valve specification prove perfect isolation?

No. Review the exact leak criterion and intended function.
