A Flowmeter Also Has a Hydraulic Pressure-Loss Boundary

Adding a measuring section can change the hydraulic duty. Evaluate its pressure loss alongside its measuring performance.

Adding a measuring section can change the hydraulic duty. Evaluate its pressure loss alongside its measuring performance.

Identify the Physical Basis

Flowmeter constructions can introduce different pressure losses; Endress+Hauser’s Coriolis reference includes pressure drop among the practical design considerations. The selected measuring bore and fluid condition belong to this assessment. A meter may provide the required signal while its hydraulic loss still changes transfer demand or the downstream pressure available.

Work Through an Example

In a hypothetical liquid route, the original duty requires 2 bar of differential pressure at the target flow. A proposed meter’s supplier-reviewed loss is 0.3 bar at that same flow and product condition. The route now requires 2.3 bar on that simplified accounting basis, before any changed flow is considered. An oversized pump or a generic meter pressure rating does not automatically demonstrate that the revised duty will be delivered.

Use the Result in the Review

Request the selected meter’s loss at the actual fluid viscosity, temperature and planned rates, rather than one catalogue water value. Add it to the route model at its physical location and recheck the pump-system intersection. Review the measuring section’s pressure rating separately: rating describes an allowable condition, while pressure loss describes a hydraulic consequence. Keep both in the order review so one number cannot substitute for the other.

Use the flowmeter filler to discuss the selected measuring and transfer arrangement together. This guide does not claim a particular sensor bore, pump reserve or loss value in HM machinery. Its purpose is to make the measurement-versus-hydraulic tradeoff visible before selection.

Customer Questions

Is pressure loss the same as pressure rating?

No. One describes hydraulic consumption; the other is an allowable condition.

Can water loss data always be used for a viscous product?

No. Obtain a justified product-condition basis.

Does adding a meter leave the operating point unchanged?

Not necessarily. Recheck the revised system curve.
