A single misalignment number cannot describe three different ways that connected shafts can differ.
Separate the offset types
Ruland distinguishes angular, parallel and axial misalignment, including combinations. Coupling suitability depends on the identified geometry rather than a generic flexible description. Primary reference: Ruland coupling selection and failure.
Angular misalignment concerns different shaft-axis directions. Parallel offset concerns axes that remain parallel but are displaced. Axial motion changes the endwise relationship. Keep the corresponding angle and length units visible; adding them into one total would destroy their meaning.
A hypothetical three-column requirement
Imagine a fictional requirement listing 0.2° angular offset, 0.1 mm parallel offset and 0.3 mm axial movement. A proposal answers only the angular value. It has not addressed the other two merely by describing the coupling as flexible. Create separate rows and ask whether the stated capabilities apply simultaneously or under different conditions.
Those values are invented examples, not permissible offsets for an HM drive. Do not treat three separate catalog maxima as proof that their simultaneous maximum combination is permitted. Preserve the exact coupling designation and the manufacturer's combined-condition basis.
Check the connected assembly
The coupling is part of a system that includes shafts, bearings and attachments. Ask how the planned offsets arise and whether the design or assembly process addresses them. A high accommodation value is not permission to ignore alignment evidence.
Retain a geometry sketch and the accepted operating case with the component record. If shaft spacing, load or temperature conditions change, revisit that case instead of relying on one old angular pass entry. This yields an interpretable request for a coupling assessment and prevents a length offset from being answered with an unrelated angle rating.
Customer Questions
Can an angle rating answer a parallel-offset requirement?
No. The geometries and units are different.
Can separate maximum offsets always occur together?
Do not assume that. Request the combined-condition basis for the identified coupling.
Does a flexible coupling remove the need to review alignment?
No. Its defined capability must be matched to the actual arrangement.
