Dielectric Strength and Volume Resistivity: Different Insulation Properties

Separate resistance to breakdown from resistivity when reviewing an insulating plastic.

Library dates organize the collection. Actual publication and revision dates are shown separately.

Dielectric-strength and volume-resistivity figures have different units and purposes.

Identify the electrical property

Ensinger's engineering-plastics manual distinguishes dielectric strength and volume resistivity. Retain the named property and method when interpreting insulation information. Primary reference: Ensinger electrical material properties.

A breakdown-related field-strength figure is not the same quantity as a material resistivity. Neither should be reduced to an unexplained good-insulator label. The proposed electrical design may also need geometry, surface conditions and other applicable information beyond those bulk material figures.

A hypothetical data-sheet reconciliation

Imagine a fictional plastic data sheet showing dielectric strength in kV/mm and volume resistivity in an identified resistance–length unit. An RFQ asks for resistivity, but an offer copies the larger-looking dielectric-strength number. The fields are not interchangeable, and their numerical sizes cannot be ranked against each other.

Make columns for requested property, offered property, units, specimen/method and relevant conditions. Mark any unanswered field rather than converting one value into another without an applicable model. This exercise gives no HM insulation specification or acceptable electrical design.

Keep material evidence within its scope

Ask how the responsible electrical designer uses the property in the actual component. Preserve the exact grade and relevant conditioning information so later substitutions do not quietly replace the data basis.

A material property by itself does not certify an assembled insulation system. Surface contamination, humidity and geometry can belong to separate requirements and should not disappear from the design record. This guide provides a concrete definition-and-units check, without prescribing a breakdown test, a working voltage or a universal insulation thickness from an isolated plastics data-sheet value.

Customer Questions

Can kV/mm fill a volume-resistivity field?

No. Those are different quantities.

Does a material property certify the assembled insulation?

No. The complete design has its own requirements.

Why retain the material condition?

The supplied grade and conditions define which property evidence applies.
