A dissolved-gas trace measures accumulation; transfer into the liquid and consumption within it can both contribute.
Define the Interface or Transport Basis
Pappenreiter and colleagues' primary oxygen-transfer balance, equation 2 writes the concentration change as volumetric transfer minus uptake. In a simplified well-mixed constant-volume model, dC/dt=kLa(Cstar−C)−r, where r is the positive uptake rate per liquid volume. Zero slope does not require zero transfer.
Review a Hypothetical Comparison
For a fictional liquid state, assign kLa=0.010 s⁻¹ and a saturation-to-current concentration difference of 0.20 mol/m³. Transfer is 0.0020 mol/(m³·s). With uptake r=0.0015 mol/(m³·s), the modeled accumulation is +0.0005 mol/(m³·s). If uptake instead equals 0.0020, the concentration stays constant while gas continues entering and being consumed. A flat trace therefore cannot alone tell those cases apart from no transfer and no consumption.
Keep the Evidence with the Decision
Keep the concentration gradient, independent transfer characterization and uptake model with the observed slope. Document additions, withdrawals and volume changes if they occur; the simple closed balance then needs extra terms. Check sensor response before interpreting a rapid slope. Choose what independent evidence would separate transfer from consumption instead of fitting two unknown rates to one trace.
This example illustrates a balance, not a biological growth prediction or a recommended oxygen setpoint. Real medium solubility and changing transfer behavior require their own evidence.

Customer Questions
Does a flat trace mean no gas transfer?
No. Transfer and uptake can balance.
Can one slope determine both unknown rates?
Not without additional information or justified constraints.
What if the liquid volume changes?
Include the relevant accumulation and flow terms rather than applying the constant-volume example unchanged.
