Retain sample area and distribution when comparing drying-test traces; unequal geometry can change the method response without changing incoming composition.
Identify the Material Response
Mettler Toledo discusses distributing a moisture-test sample in a thin, uniform layer. Sample geometry belongs beside the heating and mass-loss evidence. Primary reference: sample distribution in a moisture test.
Review a Hypothetical Comparison
Suppose an invented 4 g portion covers 8 square centimetres in one test and 4 square centimetres in another. Their areal loadings are 0.5 and 1 g per square centimetre. If material and packing are otherwise comparable, the second layer has twice the mass per area. This calculation does not predict its drying time or final moisture value.
Keep the Evidence with the Decision
Record pan identity, exposed area, portion mass and distribution observations. Keep lumps and uncovered regions visible in the method record. Ask whether geometry changed with the heating program or endpoint criterion; simultaneous changes can make a single-cause interpretation unreliable. Separate representative sampling of the incoming material from preparation of the analytical layer.
Use the actual validated method to establish the appropriate geometry, rather than treating the fictional loadings as recommendations. A slow trace might involve heat or mass transport, composition or several effects together. The review should preserve those alternatives and the accepted preparation basis. This guide does not supply an oven recipe, allowable sample thickness or an HM production drying capability.
Could unequal sample depth change the measured mass-loss profile?

Customer Questions
What doubles in the fictional comparison?
Mass per exposed area doubles.
Does twice the areal load prove twice the drying time?
No. That would require an applicable transport model.
Are the two loadings recommended method settings?
No. Use the validated preparation basis.
