A settling estimate for one isolated particle can overstate the settling speed of an interacting suspension.
Define the Process Model
The primary study on hindered settling discusses concentration-dependent settling and the Richardson–Zaki form vh/v0 = (1 − φ)^n. Here φ is solids volume fraction and n belongs to a justified model and conditions. The expression compares a suspension with its isolated-particle reference; choosing an exponent is part of the model, not a universal powder constant.
Compare a Hypothetical Case
For an invented algebra exercise, choose φ = 0.20 and illustrative n = 4. The predicted factor is 0.8⁴ = 0.4096. If v0 is hypothetically 1.0 mm/s, vh is 0.410 mm/s in that selected model. Using 20% mass fraction in the same expression without converting its basis would answer a different and potentially incorrect question.
Complete the Engineering Review
Identify the concentration basis, particle population and relevant settling regime. Record where the exponent and isolated reference came from, together with the model’s validity range. Check whether aggregation, nonuniform concentration or a compressing sediment belongs to the observation. A model ratio should not be presented as measured performance when its parameters were only assumed.
For a storage-tank enquiry, supply actual material and holding evidence. The chosen exponent and settling rate are teaching inputs. This guide narrows the review to particle interaction and concentration, rather than treating every visible separation as an isolated-sphere problem.

Customer Questions
Is n = 4 a universal value?
It is only the illustrative choice here.
Can mass percent be inserted as φ?
Convert to the defined volume basis first.
Does this predict a compacted-bed height?
That requires an appropriate sediment model.
