Retain the scattering model and optical inputs before comparing two laser-diffraction reports as equivalent descriptions of one powder.

Identify the Material Response

Mie-based laser-diffraction analysis uses optical-property information. The Fraunhofer approximation adopts different simplifying assumptions and does not use the same material optical inputs. The choice therefore belongs in the measurement record. Primary reference: Mie and Fraunhofer interpretation.

Review a Hypothetical Comparison

Suppose two fictional reports share a sample identifier. Report A records a Mie model, particle refractive index 1.55, absorption index 0.01 and dispersant index 1.33. Report B states only Fraunhofer. These invented entries identify different analysis bases; they do not calculate a size difference or prove which report is correct for that material.

Keep the Evidence with the Decision

Build an input register showing the model, source of each optical property, wavelength context and software-method identity. Flag missing entries rather than substituting plausible numbers from an unrelated formulation. If a model is changed, compare the resulting distribution under an identified reanalysis of the same scattering evidence where that comparison is available.

The engineering decision is whether the stated assumptions are defensible for the actual sample. Neither a named model nor a visually smooth distribution certifies those assumptions. Preserve the reasoning with the report supplied for powder characterization, and keep actual machine trials as a separate evidence set.

Customer Questions

Does Fraunhofer require the same inputs as Mie?

No. Their optical assumptions differ.

Are the fictional indices material recommendations?

No. They only illustrate a complete input record.

Does matching sample identity establish matching analysis?

No. Compare the model and its inputs too.
