A thermal insulation designation and an enclosure IP designation describe different properties.
Keep the two published scopes
IEC's public scope for IEC 60085 concerns thermal evaluation and designation of electrical insulation. IEC 60529's public scope concerns protection classifications provided by enclosures. These are separate subjects. Primary reference: IEC 60085 public scope; primary reference: IEC 60529 public scope.
Keep a thermal-insulation field and an enclosure-protection field in a motor comparison. The public scopes establish the distinction; this guide does not reproduce the paid standards or their detailed classification criteria. It does not infer a motor's complete environmental suitability from either field alone.
A hypothetical proposal comparison
Imagine offer A names a thermal insulation designation but leaves enclosure protection unspecified. Offer B names an enclosure IP designation but gives no thermal-insulation basis. Neither missing field can be filled using the other designation. Ask both suppliers for the applicable motor records and preserve the different questions in the comparison.
Use worksheet columns for property, offered designation, component reference, application question and missing evidence. The example contains no HM motor finding, named product rating or assurance of suitability for cleaning conditions. It simply exposes incomplete comparisons.
Connect ratings to the actual duty
Identify the relevant duty and environment before requesting evidence. The motor's operating condition and installation details remain part of the application review. A general rating label cannot silently answer questions outside its documented scope.
Preserve each designation exactly as supplied, including the component identity and reference revision. If the offered motor changes, update both fields independently. The useful decision is whether the proposal addresses each required property with applicable evidence, rather than treating one impressive label as a substitute for the other.
Customer Questions
Does an insulation thermal designation establish an enclosure IP rating?
No. They address separate properties.
Does an IP designation alone establish the thermal-insulation basis?
No. Request the separate applicable record.
Were the full paid IEC standards reproduced here?
No. Only their public scopes support the distinction.
