Normalized Tracer Response: Define the Mixing Endpoint Before Comparing Time

Define what concentration agreement means before comparing two reported mixing times.

Define what concentration agreement means before comparing two reported mixing times.

Define the Process Model

A tracer response can be normalized to the expected well-mixed concentration. COMSOL’s stirred-tank tutorial compares a local concentration with the vessel average. The chosen tolerance, duration and observation locations determine the endpoint being tested; a concentration trace has no universal built-in “finished” label.

Compare a Hypothetical Case

Suppose an invented protocol proposes |C/C_final − 1| ≤ 0.05 at three specified locations for a continuous 10 s interval. Readings of 0.97, 1.02 and 1.08 fail that proposed criterion because the third differs by 8%. A later set of 0.99, 1.03 and 1.04 meets the instantaneous range, but the required duration still needs to be observed.

Complete the Engineering Review

Record tracer identity, addition amount and the concentration reference used for normalization. Define the tolerance before comparing trials and retain the local time traces. Separate reaching the interval once from remaining within it. If the application needs several locations, a good response near the impeller should not silently stand for the entire batch.

For a manufacturing-vessel trial discussion, agree an application-specific endpoint with the supplier. The invented 5% and 10 s criterion is not a product standard or HM acceptance rule. It demonstrates why numerical mixing-time claims need their definition attached.
