Notches and Nominal Stress: Preserve the Local Geometry in a Strength Review

Retain notch and section-transition geometry when interpreting a nominal stress calculation.

Library dates organize the collection. Actual publication and revision dates are shown separately.

An average-section calculation can leave the local stress question open.

Define the geometry behind the calculation

MIT's mechanics laboratory material treats stress concentration for specified notch geometries. The local geometry is part of the analysis, not an interchangeable decorative detail. Primary reference: MIT notch mechanics.

A nominal force divided by a stated cross-sectional area can be a useful starting quantity. It should retain the area definition and should not be relabelled as the maximum local stress around every hole, notch or transition. Ask which locations the actual design assessment evaluates.

A hypothetical drawing review

Assume a fictional section calculation uses 1,000 N and 100 mm², giving nominal stress of 10 N/mm². Two drawing revisions keep that named section area but change a nearby notch radius. The equal nominal result does not establish equal local stress fields. No concentration factor is guessed from the sketch.

Create rows for load, nominal section, local feature, drawing revision and applicable analysis. The values are invented arithmetic inputs, not an HM stress result or acceptance threshold. A responsible assessment needs a model appropriate to the actual geometry and material behavior.

Keep the conclusion at its stated scope

The final report should say whether it provides a nominal estimate, a local elastic analysis or another defined result. Do not remove that distinction when summarizing the design for purchasing or service.

When a replacement changes a relief, hole or transition, preserve the geometry change in the review even if the outer dimensions and material label match. This guide identifies a missing local-geometry question; it supplies no universal notch-radius rule, fatigue reduction factor or permitted stress and does not claim that one nominal number represents every point in the component.

Customer Questions

Is nominal stress always the maximum local stress?

No. Local geometry can require a separate assessment.

Does unchanged section area prove an unchanged notch effect?

No. The feature geometry can change.

Can a concentration factor be guessed from this article?

No. Use the appropriate actual geometry and analysis basis.
