Separate an address plan from a security boundary

NIST SP 800-82 discusses network segmentation in operational technology architectures. An address grouping and an enforced communication boundary are different design questions. A subnet label tells a reviewer how addresses are organized; it does not alone show which traffic can cross a boundary. The practical procurement question is therefore what communications are needed, which paths exist and which mechanisms enforce the agreed restrictions in the actual proposed architecture.

Describe flows before naming a network product

Build a matrix with source system, destination system, purpose, direction, protocol or service, operating mode and permitted scope. Separate normal operating data from engineering access and update traffic. Record the component or rule that enforces each relevant boundary, together with the responsible owner. Avoid a broad entry called all machine traffic that obscures several unrelated paths.

Mark systems and interfaces not yet confirmed as proposed. A diagram containing a historian or gateway is not evidence that the machine supplies it. Include connections through shared infrastructure so the review does not consider only the direct cable visible beside the machine. Architecture details belong to the specific project, not a generic assumption about every controller.

Hypothetical flow-matrix comparison

Consider a fictional proposal with a machine controller, a data collector and an engineering workstation. The stated business need is controller-to-collector operating data. Proposal A assigns the controller a separate subnet but leaves routing and permitted services undefined. Proposal B identifies the required flow and the boundary rule governing it, while listing engineering access as a separately reviewed path. B supplies more architecture evidence; it is not automatically approved from that description. Add columns for required flow, enforcement reference and unanswered question. These invented systems and rules identify no installed HM network or available controller feature.

Accept the behavior of the defined boundary

The acceptance record should show how required communication is available and how excluded paths are controlled under the stated configuration. Retain the relevant architecture and rule versions so later gateways or services trigger a focused review. Keep session-level authorization and closure requirements in their own support process; segmentation does not replace them. For a machinery integration discussion, provide the site network requirements and confirm actual interface capability first. This article offers a communication-scope worksheet, not firewall commands, a security certification or a promise that a named protocol is supported by current HM equipment.

Customer Questions

Does a separate subnet prove effective isolation?

No. Identify the available routes and mechanisms that enforce the required communication boundary.

Does segmentation replace authorization for a support session?

No. Network architecture and session authorization address different controls.

What should an integration diagram identify?

Required systems and flows, actual interfaces, boundary enforcement references and responsibility for the configuration.
