When a report says phase inversion, specify whether phase continuity changed or the density order changed.
Define the Interface or Transport Basis
IUPAC identifies two meanings of phase inversion: continuity inversion and density inversion. Keep the connected liquid phase separate from which liquid is heavier. A change in vertical order need not mean that the surrounding liquid and dispersed droplets exchanged roles.
Review a Hypothetical Comparison
For a fictional liquid-liquid system, the first observation shows A droplets surrounded by connected B. Later, B droplets are surrounded by connected A: that is evidence of a continuity change. In a separate scenario, A remains dispersed in B while an independently measured density change makes A settle instead of rise. That changes buoyant direction without showing that A became the continuous phase. Labelling both observations simply as inversion hides the distinction.
Keep the Evidence with the Decision
Draw the connected phase and mark the identity of the droplets before and after the change. Record densities separately. Preserve composition, temperature and the route taken between states so another reviewer can reproduce the comparison. Use direct phase-connectivity evidence appropriate to the system rather than inferring it solely from a top-layer photograph.
These examples define the reporting question. They do not prescribe a temperature or composition threshold for inversion, and a density-order change alone does not establish emulsion stability.
Does the observation show a change in the connected phase or a reversal of which phase is denser?

Customer Questions
Does a heavier droplet necessarily become the continuous phase?
No. Density order and phase connectivity describe different features.
What makes the phrase phase inversion usable?
State its intended meaning and retain the corresponding before-and-after evidence.
Does this guide provide an inversion temperature?
No. That threshold requires evidence for the actual composition and process path.
