A moisture percentage and a water-activity value describe different aspects of a material. Preserve that distinction in the powder record.
Separate Amount from Activity
AQUALAB distinguishes moisture content, expressed against a wet or dry mass basis, from water activity. Water activity concerns the water’s vapour-pressure relationship under defined equilibrium and temperature conditions. The quantities are not interchangeable labels for one number.
Keep the moisture basis and measurement method explicit. A percentage without wet/dry basis is incomplete. Equally, an activity value should retain its temperature and method rather than being rewritten as a percent-water result. Primary characterization reference.
Illustrative Record Difference
Suppose hypothetical formulation A and formulation B share one moisture-content percentage but have different measured water activities under the same temperature basis. Their equal percentages do not force identical activity. These are invented records, not HM product stability or filling results.
AQUALAB explains that a material-specific sorption isotherm relates the quantities at constant temperature. A universal conversion should therefore not be invented from one sample pair. Keep an actual isotherm’s material, temperature and method identified if it is used.
Choose the Actual Material Question
Ask the formulation owner which measurement supports the intended comparison and whether a product-specific relationship is available. This guide provides no microbial threshold, shelf-life claim or powder-acceptance limit. Such conclusions require the applicable product assessment.
Complete the worksheet before sharing a moisture-related certificate in a dry-syrup machinery enquiry. It can clarify why two material records differ while keeping actual powder handling, dosing and process performance separate from the meaning of the laboratory quantities. Customer Questions
Can moisture percent be converted universally to activity?
The relationship is material-specific and condition-dependent; retain an appropriate basis.
Does equal moisture prove equal activity?
No. Different materials can have different relationships.
Does this article establish shelf life?
No. It explains quantities and leaves product conclusions to the applicable assessment.
