A mean transfer rate can conceal a much larger instantaneous demand. Review the delivery waveform when a pump works in strokes.
Identify the Physical Basis
Piston and plunger pumps deliver by cyclic changes in working volume, and KSB’s pump explanation identifies pulsating delivery as a characteristic. A time average describes total volume divided by elapsed time. It does not report the largest momentary flow or pressure experienced by the downstream line, valve or measuring section.
Work Through an Example
In a hypothetical one-second cycle, a pump delivers 20 mL during a 0.2-second delivery interval and none for the remaining 0.8 seconds. The cycle average is 20 mL/s, or 1.2 L/min. If delivery were uniform during its active interval, its active flow would be 100 mL/s, or 6 L/min. This deliberately simplified rectangular waveform illustrates peak-versus-mean demand; an actual stroke shape will differ.
Use the Result in the Review
Record the cycle period, active delivery interval and measurement time resolution. Ask which component was sized for average throughput and which was checked against the transient waveform. Compare pressure and flow records on a shared time axis so a peak is not interpreted as a steady route loss. Keep averaging and display smoothing settings visible in the trial record, because a calm display does not establish a calm physical flow.
For a servo-piston filler, confirm the selected dosing sequence and downstream interfaces by trial. This worksheet does not establish that the illustrative waveform exists in that machine. Any proposed pulsation control needs its own fluid, pressure and equipment review.
Which transient flow demand remains hidden by an average transfer rate?
This blank worksheet is for your own project. It contains no H M machine trial result.

Customer Questions
Can equal averages have different peaks?
Yes. Their delivery may be distributed differently over time.
Does a steady display prove steady delivery?
No. Display filtering can hide rapid changes.
Can the rectangular example predict a piston waveform?
No. Measure or obtain the actual selected delivery profile.
