A dimension can document a result without independently setting it. Its role matters when a change is requested.
Identify whether the value drives or reports
A driving model dimension controls feature geometry. A reference or driven dimension reports geometry derived from other relationships without independently controlling its size. The presence of a visible numeric value therefore does not explain how a model is constrained. Identify its role and the governing references before requesting an edit. The cited vendor explanation supports this conceptual distinction, not a universal interpretation of every drawing symbol.
Follow an invented dependent distance
Imagine points located at 20 and 50 mm from one common origin. A driven annotation between them reports 30 mm. If the second controlling position changes to 55 mm while the first remains 20 mm, the reported distance becomes 35 mm under the defined geometry.
Trying to impose an independent 30 mm distance at the same time would describe a different constraint problem. This example does not establish how every CAD system handles conflicts or prescribe a manufacturing revision. It identifies which quantity is a consequence of the selected model definition.
Ask for the intended controlling requirement
When an interface change is proposed, identify which dimensions or relationships are intended to govern it. Check whether a reported dimension is only a useful observation of that definition. Preserve the relationship between the control and the visible annotation in the change discussion.
For a released drawing, obtain the designer's interpretation where authority is unclear. A conveniently displayed dependent value can support understanding without becoming an extra independent requirement by assumption. Review the complete nominal definition before treating a changed reference result as proof that the model failed to preserve a separate design constraint.
