Two variables moving together can reveal a useful investigation question without proving that one causes the other.
Association is evidence of a relationship
A scatter plot compares paired values of two variables and can reveal linear, curved or other structure. That structure does not by itself establish causality. Common changing conditions, collection design and measurement relationships can affect the apparent association. The physical explanation and experimental evidence remain part of the conclusion.
A hypothetical time-related association
Imagine two recorded trial variables both drifting over the same operating period. Plotting one against the other produces a clear relationship. A shared time-dependent condition might contribute to both; the plot alone cannot tell whether changing one variable would change the other.
Preserve timestamps and the actual paired observations. Do not independently sort the two columns before plotting them. This example does not identify a real HM machine cause or authorize adjustment of either variable.
Turn the plot into a bounded follow-up question
State which variables were measured, their units, how observations were paired and which other conditions changed. Review the plausible mechanism with the technical owner. Ask what feasible observation or approved comparison would distinguish competing explanations.
Keep exploratory association wording in the report until the causal interpretation has suitable support. A useful equipment enquiry can say that two identified readings changed together under specified conditions. It need not overstate that finding as a confirmed component failure to justify further investigation.

| What other conditions changed? | Time and operating context |
| What mechanism needs testing? | Bounded follow-up comparison |
Customer Questions
Does strong correlation prove causation?
No. The collection context and plausible mechanism still matter.
Can the two columns be sorted independently?
That destroys their original pairing.
Can an association still be useful?
Yes. It can define a focused investigation question.
