Retain the time trace immediately after shear begins; a later steady value cannot show whether the material passed through an earlier stress maximum.
Identify the Deformation and Model
TA Instruments describes stress overshoot as a peak during start-up shear before the later response. Capturing that transient requires the imposed motion and measurement timing to be resolved. Primary reference: start-up stress growth.
Review a Hypothetical Comparison
Imagine a fictional material reaches a peak of 60 Pa after the stated motion begins and later settles near 20 Pa at the same target shear rate. The peak-to-later ratio is three. Reporting only 20 Pa would omit the start-up event; reporting only 60 Pa would omit the later condition and its timing.
Keep the Evidence with the Decision
Record the imposed-rate trace with the stress trace, time origin and actual preparation/rest history. Identify whether the motion had reached its requested value when the peak was sampled. Keep acquisition interval and averaging beside the displayed maximum so a smoothed or delayed record cannot silently become the complete transient response.
A stress maximum can reflect material and measurement contributions that need separate evaluation. It is not automatically a measured static yield stress, nor does the fictional ratio determine a pump-start pressure. Ask for the actual transient evidence if start-up matters to the proposed formulation process. These invented values demonstrate an information gap between initial and steady response, without asserting a particular HM instrument or production result.

Customer Questions
Can the steady value reveal the missed peak?
No. The time trace is needed.
Is every overshoot a certified static yield stress?
No. Preserve the method and interpretation.
Does the ratio calculate pump-start pressure?
No. An applicable process model is required.
