Cold-junction compensation needs an applicable reference temperature. Heat near the connector can make that reference differ from the actual thermocouple transition.
Locate the reference measurement
The NI USB-TC01 guide explains that nearby heat and thermal gradients can create a difference between the thermocouple connector and the cold-junction sensor. Compensation cannot correct that difference merely because a reference sensor is present. Its physical relationship to the transition matters.
Draw an invented comparison
Imagine one demonstration places the acquisition unit away from heat, while another mounts it beside a warm power component. Both records list the same thermocouple and input, yet the connector surroundings differ. Put the terminal location, nearby heat sources and stabilization conditions into the comparison record.
Do not diagnose every disagreement as a cold-junction problem. Sensor contact, conversion and other influences remain separate possibilities. The purpose of the sketch is to expose an unrecorded condition before the readings are ranked, not to prescribe cabinet construction.
Request the installed-reference evidence
Ask the supplier how the input measures its reference temperature and what environmental or installation restrictions apply. Record the connector arrangement and changes during the trial. Evaluate the reference-temperature influence in the actual measurement chain rather than quoting a standalone thermocouple tolerance as the whole system result.

Customer Questions
Is the presence of compensation enough?
No. The reference must represent the relevant terminal condition.
Does this guide identify the cause of a real temperature error?
No. It defines evidence for a specific influence.
Should connector surroundings be recorded?
Yes. They can differ between demonstration and installation.
