Three wires describe a probe connection. They do not, by themselves, prove how a particular resistance input handles the third lead.
Check the circuit behind the terminal count
The archived FieldPoint instructions distinguish a three-wire connection to a four-wire input from a module with dedicated third-lead compensation. This is a useful warning: conductor count and compensation behavior are separate facts. Review the exact input architecture instead of assuming that any three available terminals provide the same result.
Use a configuration comparison
Imagine two offers list the same three-wire probe. Offer A includes an input with documented lead compensation; offer B uses a different resistance-input arrangement. Place the two input manuals beside the probe specification. Ask which lead resistances enter each result and what assumptions the compensation requires.
Do not transfer one product’s percentage compensation claim to another module. Record the permitted cable arrangement, matching assumptions where applicable, and any residual contribution in the installed measurement evaluation. A probe colour convention alone cannot answer these questions.
Make the supplier response testable
Request an annotated signal-path explanation and an applicable lead-resistance test or specification. Keep the response tied to the offered module revision and probe connection. If the supplied documentation is unclear, resolve it before treating the measured temperature as evidence for a machine trial.

Customer Questions
Do three probe wires identify the input algorithm?
No. Review the input documentation.
Can another module’s compensation percentage be reused?
No. It is a hardware-specific statement.
Are wire colours sufficient evidence?
No. Confirm terminal function and sensor documentation.
