Traceability concerns a measurement result and its reference chain. An equipment sticker helps identify status but cannot describe the whole chain.
Follow the stated reference
Metrological traceability relates a result to a reference through a documented, unbroken calibration chain, with each calibration contributing uncertainty. The chain needs enough information to understand the reference and the relevant calibration relationships. A generic logo does not provide those details.
An invented document review
Imagine a weighing trial cites balance B-17, while the attached certificate covers B-71. Even if both have current stickers, the evidence does not identify the measuring system used. Resolve the mismatch before claiming that the trial reading is covered by the supplied certificate.
Next check whether the range, method and uncertainty information are applicable to the trial result. A documented reference chain does not alone prove that every use condition or decision is suitable. This example illustrates evidence review rather than a judgement on any real laboratory.
Assemble an auditable link
Connect the raw result to the instrument identity, applicable calibration report and stated reference. Retain corrections, uncertainty and relevant use conditions. Ask the laboratory about any missing chain information and evaluate fitness for the intended measurement separately.

|---|---|
| Which result is claimed traceable? | Identified reading and measurement model |
| Does instrument identity match? | Serial or asset identity |
| Which reference and uncertainty apply? | Applicable documented chain |
Customer Questions
Does a sticker replace a calibration report?
No. It cannot describe the applicable chain and uncertainty.
Does traceability guarantee fitness for every task?
No. Suitability still depends on the intended measurement.
Should identity mismatches be silently corrected?
No. Resolve them with the responsible evidence owner.
