Two-Wire Sensor Leakage: An Off State Need Not Be Zero Current

Check two-wire sensor leakage and receiver off-state requirements together.

Library dates organize the collection. Actual publication and revision dates are shown separately.

A documented off state can include a nonzero current.

Keep off-state evidence numerical

ifm's cited sensor data explicitly lists leakage current for two-wire operation. That component-specific field demonstrates why off need not mean zero current. Primary reference: ifm identified two-wire leakage field.

For the actual selected sensor and receiver, preserve the documented leakage limit and the input's relevant off-state recognition basis. On-state voltage drop and loading can also matter, but they should remain separate fields rather than being folded into an unexplained works-with 24 V claim.

A hypothetical off-state mismatch

Assume fictional documentation gives a sensor maximum off current of 0.4 mA, while the proposed receiver requires at most 0.2 mA for its stated off condition. The two entries leave a compatibility concern; matching nominal supply voltage does not remove it. Do not infer that the receiver must always activate, because actual behavior still depends on the complete interface.

Record sensor mode, leakage source, input criterion and responsible compatibility decision. These numbers are invented, not copied from the cited sensor or used by HM. They establish no actual false-trigger diagnosis.

Keep substitutions condition-specific

Ask which operating mode the data describes, especially where a component supports different wiring architectures. Preserve those conditions with the chosen input reference instead of using a leakage value from another mode.

The final record should identify how the actual on and off requirements are satisfied. This guide helps a buyer check a defined interface quantity without prescribing a load resistor, changing a control input or treating a generic zero-current assumption as proof of compatibility. Any actual circuit modification requires the complete component and system design basis.

Customer Questions

Must a two-wire sensor draw zero current when off?

No. Read the selected component's documented off behavior.

Does a leakage mismatch prove every false trigger?

No. The actual circuit and observation need assessment.

Can a value from another operating mode be reused automatically?

No. Preserve the applicable mode and input basis.
