UV Weathering of Plastics: An Indoor Material Claim Does Not Set Outdoor Life

Ask which weathering evidence represents an exposed plastic part's actual light, moisture and temperature duty.

Library dates organize the collection. Actual publication and revision dates are shown separately.

Indoor suitability does not establish an outdoor exposure life.

Define the relevant exposure

Q-Lab identifies sunlight, heat and moisture among weathering influences on plastics. A test program must represent the question it is intended to answer. Primary reference: Q-Lab plastics weathering.

Record whether the component is indoors, outdoors or behind another material that changes exposure. Define which change matters to the application, such as color, strength or cracking. A generic weather-resistant label cannot silently supply a duration, environment and acceptance endpoint.

A hypothetical evidence matrix

Imagine a fictional plastic guard offered with an indoor-use description and a separate color-change test. The intended location is exposed outdoors, and the required function depends on retained mechanical behavior. Mark the color evidence for its stated endpoint and leave the mechanical exposure question visible. Do not turn a color result into a complete service-life conclusion.

Build columns for exposure method, duration, grade and color identity, observed property and application requirement. These are invented conditions, not an HM guard, outdoor installation result or guaranteed lifetime. No conversion from chamber hours to field years is assumed.

Compare results under a common basis

Ask how the selected exposure relates to the actual service question and what limitations remain. If two offers use different methods or endpoints, preserve those differences rather than ranking their hour figures alone.

A grade, stabilizer or color change may affect which evidence applies, so retain the exact material identity with the accepted result. This guide helps define a weathering request without prescribing a universal UV test, copying a supplier performance claim or asserting that an accelerated-test duration is automatically equivalent to a fixed number of outdoor years.

Customer Questions

Does color stability prove retained strength?

No. The property endpoint must match the requirement.

Do chamber hours automatically convert into field years?

No. The application and test relationship needs evidence.

Should the exact grade and color be recorded?

Yes. They help identify the applicability of the exposure result.
