A yield-stress label is incomplete when its pretreatment, test and evaluation method are missing.
Yield Stress Is Not a Thickness Unit
Anton Paar describes yield-point evaluation in terms of a shear-stress limit and notes that the reported value depends on pretreatment, measurement and evaluation method. Its unit is Pa. It should not be read as a viscosity number in Pa·s.
A flowing material can be evaluated with different models or test approaches. Keep the reported model and measured range beside an inferred intercept. A fitted value and a directly observed test response are not automatically the same kind of evidence. Primary rheology reference.
Illustrative Model Disagreement
Imagine two hypothetical reports of the same identified sample, one using a named flow-curve fit and another using a different method after another preparation history. Their different yield values do not, by themselves, prove one product lot is inconsistent.
Anton Paar’s measurement-error guidance discusses transient effects when the measurement time is insufficient for the response to adapt at low shear rates. The responsible reviewer should resolve the method comparison before assigning a material cause. This invented scenario provides no actual HM yield value or pumping threshold.
State What the Number Answers
Ask whether the intended question concerns structure after rest, response after prior shear or another defined condition. Obtain the sample preparation, test sequence, evaluation rule and relevant uncertainty or limitation statement from the measurement owner.
Complete the worksheet with the chosen value and its full reference. For a processing-tank proposal, the record can frame a formulation or transfer question. It does not directly calculate the pressure required to start a real route or replace the supplier’s actual hydraulic assessment. HM application context: Processing Tank.

Customer Questions
Is yield stress the same as viscosity?
No. They are different quantities with different units.
Should different-method values be averaged?
Resolve their method and condition comparability before combining them.
Does one yield value set a transfer pressure?
The actual fluid, geometry and process require an engineering assessment.
