Sampling and Trial Analysis

Bootstrap Resampling: More Resamples Do Not Create More Physical Trials

Bootstrap draws reuse the observed data. A large number of computational resamples should never be reported as a large number of independent machine trials.

The statistical question

Bootstrap resampling draws from an observed data set with replacement and repeatedly calculates a statistic to study its sampling uncertainty. A draw can reuse an observation more than once and omit another. Additional resamples improve the computational approximation within the chosen method; they do not supply missing physical conditions or additional independent observations. Suitability depends on the statistic and the sampling structure.

An illustrative review example

Suppose five invented trial-run summaries are 3,4,5,6 and 9. One five-entry resample might be 3,3,6,9,9; another might be 4,4,5,5,6. Neither is a new machine run. Reporting 2,000 such computational draws as 2,000 production trials would misstate the evidence. The original five observations, their collection conditions and any dependence remain the physical basis of the analysis.

Prepare the evidence for discussion

Identify the resampled unit, statistic, number of draws, interval method and reproducibility details in the report. Ask whether individual readings, matched pairs, batches or ordered blocks should be resampled for the actual design. Keep the raw physical records accessible and state unrepresented products or operating conditions. A machinery buyer should read the bootstrap output as an analysis of available evidence, with its limitations, rather than as expanded trial coverage.

Customer Questions

Can an observation appear twice in a draw?

Yes. Drawing with replacement permits repeated selections and omitted observations.

Are more resamples more physical evidence?

No. They are additional computational draws from the original observed data.

Is the ordinary bootstrap suitable for every statistic?

No. The statistic, distribution and sampling structure need review before selecting the method.
