Zero Stability Matters Differently at a Small Mass-Flow Duty

At a low mass rate, a Coriolis meter’s additive zero-stability term can become important relative to the quantity being measured.

At a low mass rate, a Coriolis meter’s additive zero-stability term can become important relative to the quantity being measured.

Identify the Physical Basis

A zero-stability specification is commonly expressed in mass-flow units. Emerson’s technical paper, section 2.2 relates its relative contribution at the low end to Z/Q × 100%. This term is different from a percentage-of-reading headline specification. The selected meter’s actual performance statement and installation conditions determine how the full error assessment is made.

Work Through an Example

Use an invented zero term Z = 0.02 kg/h for illustration. Its ratio to 10 kg/h is 0.2%; its ratio to 1 kg/h is 2%. If treated as a constant illustrative offset over 12 seconds, it corresponds to 0.02 × 12/3,600 kg = about 0.067 g. That is not a prediction of a particular dose error: real zero behaviour, dynamics and other terms need evidence.

Use the Result in the Review

Read the selected sensor’s zero-stability value with its units, not just the maximum nominal capacity. Include the lowest actual mass rate and the length of the measurement interval. Ask for the installation-specific zero assessment and how cutoff, filtering and the totalizer treat near-zero values. Keep those configuration questions separate from arithmetic; a forced zero display does not remove the underlying measurement term.

For the flowmeter filler, first confirm whether a Coriolis instrument is selected. A useful inquiry states the smallest dose and actual delivery profile, then requests the relevant performance basis. This guide does not declare a minimum acceptable fill size or provide a zeroing procedure for unspecified equipment.

Customer Questions

Is zero stability the displayed number of decimals?

No. It is a performance term under defined conditions.

Does a cutoff eliminate physical low flow?

No. It affects reporting; actual flow may still occur.

Can Z/Q alone predict every batch error?

No. The full specification and dynamic evidence are needed.
